Guidelines for Foreign Correspondents Visiting Ghana

All foreign correspondents wishing to visit Ghana are required to complete an Application for Press Accreditation Form at the nearest Ghana Diplomatic Mission. The application, accompanied by two passport-sized photographs, will be forwarded to the Director of the Information Services Department in Accra for processing.

To avoid delays, the Mission recommends that applications be submitted at least fourteen (14) days prior to the proposed date of travel.

In cases where correspondents are required to travel at short notice to cover breaking news in Ghana, permission may be sought through the Mission from the Director of the Information Services Department in Accra. Applicants should clearly indicate the purpose of their visit, members of government and officials they wish to interview, and places of interest they intend to visit.

Requests for interviews with the President of the Republic should be submitted through the Mission and must be accompanied by proposed interview questions. These questions should be received in Accra not less than four (4) weeks prior to the arrival of the correspondent in Ghana.

Requests for interviews with Ministers of State and other Government Officials should be made through the Information Services Department.

Upon arrival in Ghana, visiting correspondents are required to report to the Information Services Department for accreditation before undertaking any assignment. A fee is charged in Ghana for the issuance of press cards to foreign correspondents.

Accreditation issued for visiting correspondents covers one visit only. However, accreditation for resident foreign correspondents is valid for one (1) year, subject to renewal. Applications for renewal must be accompanied by written confirmation from the correspondent’s employer confirming continued employment.

A fee equivalent to US$200 per applicant (in Ghana cedis) is charged for accreditation covering one year.

Important Note: Personnel of the Armed Forces, Police, Immigration, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and Prisons must not be photographed, filmed, or interviewed without prior permission obtained through the Director of the Information Services Department.
